Who is this course for?

This course is open to all optometrists working in the NHS in Scotland. Pre-registration optometrists working in Scotland may book provisional places but priority will be given to registered optometrists. This course will give optometrists working under the Scottish General Ophthalmic Services contract a deeper understanding of the importance of record keeping and the requirements of the GOS contract.Click here to book.

What will this course cover?

Through a series of lectures, demonstrations and interactive workshop sessions this course will cover:

  • Essential elements of record keeping
  • Taking and recording an accurate patient history
  • Interview techniques to make sure your patients talk & listen
  • Legal issues and data security
  • Examples of good and bad record keeping
  • Using record cards to defend a legal case
  • Making accurate GOS claims

Course content will be supported by a comprehensive, full-colour delegate pack covering the theoretical application of all of the techniques used. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Why has NES commissioned this course?

The General Ophthalmic Services (Scotland) regulations schedule 5 specify what data should be recorded during an eye examination. It is important that optometrists working within the GOS contract understand the requirements placed on them by these regulations and that they are able to record the necessary information in primary and secondary eye examinations. Good records that accurately reflect the findings of an eye examination are important for continuous patient care as well as providing important defence for optometrists in cases of complaints.
